- DESCRIPTION
-
- TUNE TRIVIA is a game that features both tunes and trivia questions. It is
- played by humans. While TUNE TRIVIA is unique and exciting for one player,
- it truly qualifies as a super "parlor game" since up to six people may play
- at one time. It's one of the first games to use music as its primary
- sensory medium.
-
- The computer plays the most familiar part of a well-known song and you must
- guess the title in twenty seconds or less; a countdown clock on the screen
- lets you know how much time you have. Your average score is based on how
- long it takes you to name the song. The computer displays your score after
- each tune. There are more than two hundred songs in the program.
-
- There are four options to the basic game, which are described in detail a
- bit later: A simple version, a strategy version, and a simultaneous
- version. In addition, there's another option you can plug into any of
- these three game versions - answering trivia questions about music, ranging
- from the late nineteenth century to the present. The fourth game option is
- answering trivia questions only, without naming songs.
-
- There are two hundred questions in all; approximately half are fairly easy
- and the remainder are more challenging. The most ardent trivia buff will
- be hard pressed to correctly answer them all.
-
- Finally, there are maintenance programs included which let you alter the
- songs and/or the trivia questions. You can also enter your own.
-
- Music played on a computer is very precise because it's based on
- mathematical principles; therefore, the one-voice IBM sound system makes
- some songs sound slightly mechanical; great care has been taken, however,
- to make them as smooth-sounding and as recognizable as possible.
-
-
- HOW TO RUN THE PROGRAM
-
- To operate TUNE TRIVIA you'll need:
-
- - An IBM Personal Computer or PCjr with at least 128K of RAM (random access
- memory) and an IBM DOS (disk operating system). DOS version 1.1 and above
- is needed for the PC and version 2.1 is needed for the PCjr.
-
- - At least one disk drive.
-
- - An 80 column monochrome or a 40 or 80 column color display screen.
-
- - It's a good idea, also, to keep your computer operating instructions
- handy in case you need to refer to them from time to time.
-
- TUNE TRIVIA is started by placing the diskette in the default drive and
- entering TUNETRIV. The diskette is set up so that you can make it an auto
- starting program by placing a copy of DOS on the diskette. This is done
- with the SYS command.

-
-
-
-
-
-
- The first time TUNE TRIVIA is executed, you will need to configure your
- system to match the program to the type of monitor screen you have. At you
- try to run the game, you'll be asked the configuration you want to use.
- The screen shows:
-
- SELECT ONE OF THE FOLLOWING SCREEN OPTIONS.
-
- 1 - Monochrome monitor (80 columns)
-
- 2 - Color graphics board (80 columns)
-
- 3 - Color graphics board (40 columns)
-
- Press number corresponding to your system set-up.
-
- If you're using PCjr. the only choice above is 3, regardless of the type of
- monitor you're using.
-
- NOTE: When the command is PRESS, the program continues as soon as you make
- an entry. When the command is ENTER, you must enter whatever is requested
- and THEN press the ENTER key for the program to continue.
-
- If you press the wrong number by mistake, there's a MAINTENANCE program
- that allows you to re-configure at will.
-
- Next, the screen shows:
-
- Press the key indicating the drive
- containing the data files. Use X if
- the data resides with the programs.
- That is the normal set-up.
-
- Normally, you'll press X. The only time you wouldn't is if you had added
- many songs and questions to the point where the data had to be put on
- another disk. In that case...
-
- - If you have a two-drive system, press B and put the extra data disk in
- that drive.
-
- - If you have a one-drive system (e.g. PCjr), press A.
-
- As soon as you make the entry the program will run. While it's running the
- screen shows:
-
- Data disk will be checked for tunes and
- trivia questions.
-
- As soon as the check is made, you'll get a screen which shows the following
- based on the entries you made:
-
- There are 22 sets of tunes, and 21 sets of
- trivia questions.
-
- This data will reside on the default operating system drive.
-
- You are using a xxxxxxxxxxx monitor.
- The screen will display xx characters per line.
-
- --3--
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- Press any key to continue
-
- When you press any key to continue, you'll first see the TUNE TRIVIA logo.
- It is recognizable by little notes dancing across the screen with the
- WILLIAM TELL OVERTURE playing in the background.
-
- NOTE: To shorten the playing time of the TUNE TRIVIA logo, press ANY KEY
- EXCEPT ESC.
-
- IMPORTANT: If, after starting the game, questions are not visible and/or
- underlining of text occurs, you may have configured your screen
- incorrectly. For example, if you select screen option 3 (which requires the
- color/graphics board) on a system with only a monochrome board, questions
- and text would be directed to the board not installed and, therefore, would
- not be visible.
-
- The same situation will occur if you've configured TUNE TRIVIA for one
- system and then want to run it on a system with a different configuration.
- In either case, see the MAINTENANCE program. (Note: the configuration data
- is kept in the file SIGSOFT. Another way to force the configuration to be
- done is to erase the file SIGSOFT. The next time the program is run, it
- will start with the configuration questions.)
-
-
- PLAYING THE GAME
-
- To play the game, enter TUNETRIV at a DOS prompt.
-
- After the logo has run, the screen shows:
-
- TUNE TRIVIA
-
- There are four different types of games in
- TUNE TRIVIA. Select the one you wish by
- pressing the game number.
-
- Game Description
-
- 1 - Simple version, no strategy
- 2 - Strategy version, weighted points
- 3 - Simultaneous version
- 4 - Trivia questions only
-
- Once you make a choice of 1, 2, 3, or 4, the screen shows:
-
- You may answer trivia questions for
- bonus points. Press Y if this option
- is desired or N if not.
-
- After you've made your choice, another screen appears:
-
- Please answer the following questions.
- Number of players (1-6)
-
-
- --4--
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- This obviously means that up to six people can play at one time, or you may
- choose to have two teams or some other arrangement. If more than one
- person is playing, you'll get a repeat of the following question for as
- many people as the number you just entered up to six.
-
- Please enter the player names.
- Player 1 - xxxxxxxxxxxx
-
- And finally you'll answer the following question:
-
- Enter the number of rounds (1-50)?
-
- NOTE: A "round" is one song and/or trivia question per player. Remember
- you must hit the ENTER key whenever you are told to enter some piece of
- data.
-
- At this point the game will begin.
-
-
- - GAME INFORMATION -
-
-
- GAME 1 - SIMPLE VERSION, NO STRATEGY
-
- The songs are presented randomly and each is played for about twenty
- seconds. Try to guess the correct title within that time. A countdown
- clock appears on the screen when the song begins and stops as soon as you
- press any key indicating you know the title. Your AVERAGE scores is based
- on how quickly you do this EACH TIME.
-
- You've probably heard most of these songs before; the trick, however, is to
- remember the CORRECT title. The game has been programmed to recognize the
- exact title including correct punctuation if required, or two alternative
- keywords in the title that show you recognize the song.
-
- If you choose the trivia question option, each tune you name correctly will
- be followed by a bonus trivia question. Each of these is worth ten points
- if you answer correctly. When entering your answer, use the word "and"
- instead of an ampersand (&). For example, ONE AND TWO, not ONE & TWO.
- Also, to correct any typing error, use the BACKSPACE key.
-
- NOTE: IF you feel your answer to either the song title or the trivia
- question is correct when the computer has called it wrong, press the ESC
- key before you press a key to play the next song. This overrides the
- scoring system by showing the correct title or answer, and awarding you the
- points. This gives you some flexibility in your answer and allows you to
- say you had a correct answer the computer didn't consider.
-
- Also, if more than one person is playing, the final decision as to "correct
- or incorrect" can be left up to the opponents.
-
- This is the best version to start with until you're comfortable with the
- way the game is played.
-
-
- --5--
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- GAME 2 - STRATEGY VERSION, WEIGHTED POINTS
-
- This is played exactly as Game 1 with one exception: you may choose the
- number of seconds allowed (up to 20) in which to stop the clock and answer.
- The shorter time you pick, the more points the song is worth: 20 seconds =
- 20 points, 10 seconds = 30 points, 1 second = 40 points. Therefore, if you
- choose a low time and miss, your average can drop quite dramatically.
- You're gonna love it!
-
-
- GAME 3 - SIMULTANEOUS VERSION
-
- This allows head-to-head competition between up to six players, or between
- teams. The idea is to see who can recognize the tune the quickest - much
- like TV's "Name That Tune."
-
- Seat one player to the right of the keyboard, one to the left, and crowd in
- anyone else playing in the best way possible so everyone has access to the
- keyboard.
-
- Each player enters his/her name. Next, each player enters the letter-key
- he/she will use to play the game;this serves to identify the players also.
- The screen will display whatever key each chooses beside the respective
- name so nobody will forget which key to hit once a song begins. Each
- player may hit ONLY that key when he/she recognizes a song. If anyone
- strikes a wrong key, the song will be repeated.
-
- If a player strikes his/her key correctly and guesses incorrectly, another
- will get a chance on the same song. If there's disagreement over the
- computer answer, opponents should negotiate and, if all agree, strike ESC
- key to override the computer and get the points.
-
-
- GAME 4 - TRIVIA QUESTIONS ONLY
-
- When you choose 4, the first question immediately appears on your screen.
- Enter your answer - if correct, you'll get ten points;if not, you'll get
- none.
-
-
-
-
- MAINTENANCE
-
- The maintenance programs allow you to alter the songs and questions, delete
- or add songs and questions of your choosing, and to re-configure your
- particular set-up.
-
- There is one way to access the maintenance programs. They are invoked by
- striking the ESC key while the logo (William Tell Overture) is running. The
- following maintenance menu will then appear;
-
-
-
-
- --6--
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- You have requested the use of the tune
- functions. Press the key corresponding to
- the function you desire.
-
- 1 - Update the tunes available.
-
- 2 - Update the trivia questions available.
-
- 3 - Reset the configuration: screen size,
- color, etc.
-
- 4 - Play the game.
-
- 5 - Exit to operating system.
-
- If you press 1, you'll get the following options on screen:
-
-
- TUNE MAINTENANCE
-
- 1 - Add a tune
-
- 2 - Delete a tune
-
- 3 - Change a tune
-
- 4 - Leave tune maintenance
-
- Press number desired
-
- If you again press 1, you'll see a display:
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------
- | Title (1) |
- | |
- | Octave(2) Tempo(3) Length(4) |
- | |
- | Keywords(5) |
- | (6) |

- | (7) |

-
- The numbers in parentheses indicate the seven areas in which entries are
- made.
-
- --7--
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- This program was written to involve only certain keys. TAB is the only key
- that allows you to move between the seven areas. The four arrow keys on
- the right side of your keyboard allow you to move the cursor left and
- right, and up and down within each of the areas. On model PC, the buttons
- also have numbers 2, 4, 6, and 8 on them. PCjr. buttons are also marked
- Home, Pg Up, Pg Dn, and End. In addition, the Ins (insert) and Del
- (delete) keys are useful for adding or omitting a character in the middle
- of a line. After such an entry, all characters following are automatically
- adjusted space-wise.
-
- The ENTER key is used ONLY when TUNE note entry has been COMPLETED. When
- struck, this key either plays what was entered or indicates an error in
- coding.
-
- IF YOUR PRESS 2 OR 3, you'll be asked in which set of songs (no. 1-22) you
- wish to make a deletion or a change. Either of these keys makes it
- possible to see all song titles in the tune program. You may have already
- discovered this on your own.
-
-
- PROGRAMMING A SONG
-
- The IBM BASIC manual has an excellent discussion of the techniques and
- format to be utilized in coding music. TUNE TRIVIA has adhered strictly to
- the manual (section 4-209) instructions with some programming liberties
- taken to make tune entry easier for you.
-
- The best way to learn is to do. If you read music it will be very helpful
- in transforming notes to letter code. Since only twenty seconds of a song
- will be played back, it's useless to enter more than twenty seconds of
- coding. You should enter the most well-known portion of the song -
- generally, that part that includes the title (in the lyrics). Avoid
- entering introductions, verses, etc., that will be less familiar to the
- average player. If tune entry is error-free, the program will tell you how
- long your song plays. If it's more than twenty seconds, you might want to
- go back and delete some of it. REMEMBER - it's the TAB key that allows you
- to move the cursor into the area you need.
-
- If a song sounds too fast or too slow, adjust the tempo (total range:
- 32-255).
-
- NOTE: TUNE TRIVIA'S music library is made up entirely of songs in the
- public domain. If we had used recent (within the last fifty years) songs
- the royalties that would have to be paid would be so great that the whole
- project would have been impossible. There are things like mechanical
- copyrights, synchronization copyrights, and performance royalties - all
- three of which would have to be paid if copyrighted music were to be
- programmed by us in this program. So you can add the tunes you want but
- don't try to sell it or give it away if you use other than public domain
- material. The laws are quite explicit in this area and have been tested.

-
-
-
-
- TRIVIA MAINTENANCE
-
- This program (no. 2 in maintenance menu) enables you to alter, delete, or
- add to any of the trivia questions. It's done in much the same way as Tune
- Maintenance with one exception: to save your new question, answer, and
- keywords, press ENTER key after writing the last keyword. Depending on the
- length of your questions, and whether or not you entered questions along
- with songs you entered, it's possible to add a maximum of eight hundred to
- a thousand (approximately) questions (only).
-
- Never write beyond the box, and don't try to use the Shift keys for
- capitalization - nothing will happen.
-
- When you're finished with either Tune Maintenance or Trivia Maintenance,
- press 4 to leave that program and return to the main menu.
-
